A Great Shepherd

View daily reading plan: Hebrews 13.10-21

In these verses four reasons are given as to why we may be confident. The first reason is that “the God of peace” is in control and we can enjoy peace of mind when we rest in Him.

The second reason is that His power has been declared by raising our Lord Jesus from the dead. This was the most common subject of the early preachers in the Acts. It is the vindication of the work of Christ (Rom 4:25), it is the assurance of our hope (1 Cor 15), it is the triumphant declaration of His victory over the host of darkness (Col 2:13-15). Here it is the assurance of the power available to us for our lives.

The third reason for confidence is the subject we are considering, “that great Shepherd of the sheep”. There is One who is watching over us every step of the way. We may be confident because He has already revealed Himself as the One who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11) and knows His sheep (John 10:14).

The final reason is “the blood of the everlasting covenant”. Every demand of God has been met and there is nothing left for us to do except to rest in His completed work. The result of this is that we can be perfected in every good work to fulfil His will in a way that is well-pleasing to Him.

What greater confidence could we need for our pathway here?
