This book was first published by Gospel Tract Publications in 1981 and has been freshly typeset and reprinted for the benefit of all who value sound teaching on the glorious Person of the Lord Jesus.
It covers 13 aspects of His Person presented in a progressive fashion from His Pre-existence, Deity and Eternal Sonship through the Incarnation, Perfect Servant Character, Impeccability and Moral Glories of Christ to His Atonement, Resurrection, Ascension, Present Ministry, Second Coming and Millennial Reign. Each of the subjects is considered by more than one writer to add variety and extend the scriptural coverage of the topics.
While the treatment of each subject may lack depth of explanation, there is great benefit to the reader in the breadth of appreciation. Also helpful are the references to specific scriptures to prove what is being taught. For example, the Deity of Christ by Philip Harding uses the early verses of Hebrews chapter 1 to consider Divine Revelation through Him, Divine Power displayed by Him, Divine Glory manifested in Him, Divine Essence belonging to Him and Divine Titles ascribed to Him.
Dealing with the Impeccability of Christ, Norman Crawford asserts: “The Lord Jesus was unspotted for no defilement from an evil world could touch Him. He was also unblemished, for from within His holy Person no flaw could mar Him. (1Pet 1.19)”.
Harold Paisley writes to expound the truth of the Advocacy of Christ and distinguishes this from His Priesthood. “The Priest is with God, but the Advocate is with the Father. The Priest has to do with infirmities, never sins (Heb 4.15), while the Advocate had to do with sins. The High Priest sustains the worship of His people within the holiest, while the Advocate secures the people of God in their family privileges when sin has interfered”.
Future events are also referenced and Philip Harding’s presentation of the Church as the Bride of Christ is delightful. He writes of The Bridal Relationship of the Church (Her subjection to Christ, Her suitability for Christ, Her sufficiency in Christ, Her surpassing beauty when she is with Christ), The Bridal Display of the Church, and the Bridal Dignity of the Church.
I commend this book to all, but especially to young believers who wish to develop their appreciation of the Person of Christ.
