View daily reading plan: Genesis 37.17-20

In continuing to search for his brothers, Joseph placed himself in grave danger. “They saw him afar off” (Gen 37.18). His coat made him distinctive, easily recognisable.

“They conspired against him”; this is another phrase that finds its counterpart in the experience of the Lord Jesus. Like Joseph, His distinctiveness aroused malicious intentions. Early in His ministry they “took counsel…how they might destroy him” (Mk 3.6), and with the passing of time that objective became an obsession.

“This dreamer…we shall see what will become of his dreams” (Gen 37.19-20). They knew that the dreams predicted their subjection to him, and they were set on thwarting God’s intentions! From the first book of the Bible right to the last, men have tried to oppose God. Even at a time when Christ’s supremacy will be obvious as He emerges from heaven with power and great glory, “the beast, and the kings of the earth” will “make war against him” (Rev 19.19). How futile! What folly to think that they will frustrate the purpose of God that Christ should reign unrivalled!
