Rest in Service

View daily reading plan: Luke 4.38-41

The Lord stood over her. He assumed the position of power and authority. He then rebuked the fever – animate and inanimate matter respond to the Creator’s voice. He rebukes Satan and demons; He rebukes the wind and the sea; He rebukes illness. All matter derives being from Him and must obey His voice. The results were immediate and effective. No period of convalescence was required. The fever left her, “and immediately she arose and ministered unto them” (v.39).

It may seem a contradiction in terms, but service can only be fully effective by resting – not resting from service, but resting in service. The Lord Himself said “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matt 11:29). Our blessed Lord was the perfect Servant. He served in calm, tranquil dependence upon God. May we enjoy that restful service today.

“Drop Thy still dews of quietness
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace”.
