Made Himself of no Reputation

View daily reading plan: Philippians 2

It is remarkable to appreciate that the Lord was active in this step. It was not an action taken by another, imposing its consequences upon the Saviour. Rather, it was something in which the Lord was wholly involved. It was His own voluntary act.

He could not empty Himself of His deity. He could not cease to be what He is eternally. However, it is clear, from the context, that He gave up temporarily His place in glory.  He stepped from heaven’s glory into the midst of earth’s shame. He was born of the virgin. His mother was not a woman of status or wealth. He came to the poverty of the manger of Bethlehem. He was not associated with the palace or the throne but with the carpenter’s bench at despised Nazareth. Truly, he “made himself of no reputation”!
