A Great Salvation

View daily reading plan: Hebrews 1.1-3; 2.1-4

The salvation of God is so great because the Saviour Himself is so great. In contrast to a partial revelation extended over a long period of time, we now have a full revelation given in the Person of the Son of God. Our Saviour is not another prophet. He is the full revelation of God.

The work of the Son is emphasised when we read, “when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Heb 1:3). It is a complete work, with nothing to be added to it. This is clearly manifest in the fact that He “sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high”. This place was His eternally and He now can claim it in resurrection by the value of His finished work. He not only claims for Himself the place far above all, but He brings others to share it with Him (Eph 1:22-23).

Another pointer to the greatness of our salvation is in the contrast between the Son and angels. Angels are simply ministering spirits. They could bring physical deliverance to men. He is the Eternal Son. He alone could bring spiritual deliverance to us and deal with the question of sin completely. Hebrews 2 begins by contrasting the message spoken by angels with the great salvation preached first by our Lord Jesus Himself.

He is great, His work is great and His victory is great, so the salvation He provides must be great indeed.
