Will a Man Rob God?

View daily reading plan: Malachi 3.8-12

What about our giving today? We have no instruction for believers relative to the giving of tithes, but we do have very practical instructions regarding the giving of material things in 1 Corinthians 16:2-3. Remember that “God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:7).

Turning to their offering of sacrifices, Malachi has already challenged the people because they brought torn, lame and sick animals (1:13). Now we learn that God had been robbed of that which was rightfully His – worship from His own. Worship is homage rendered to God by His own for who He is, and what He has done. Scripture teaches that worship is costly, involving preparation; it requires our time meditating in the word of God, and it will necessitate sacrifice. Is He not worth it? Of course He is, and worthy of far more besides.

All who turned back to the Lord would witness Him “open the windows of heaven, and pour out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (3:10). The next part of the prophecy is yet future, and points to the thousand-year reign of Christ, when Israel will indeed be a “delightsome land”. Believers will share in that administration “with Christ”.
