Shining the Light
View daily reading plan: Mt 5.16; Phil 2.15
“In the midst of a crooked and perverse nation ... [we are to] shine as lights in the world”. “Holding forth the word of life” is important, “preaching the Word”, but preaching must be backed up by shining, by the works and ways of those into whose hearts God’s light has shined (2 Cor 4.6).
When our Lord Jesus was here, He said “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” How clearly that light shone, exposing the crafty works of darkness and at the same time leading into light those who were willing to follow Him (Jn 8.12).
He also said to us who would come after Him, “Ye are the light of the world” (Mt 5.14). Will our “candle” be on its candlestick, unobscured by bushels of business or beds of idleness? Are our assemblies truly like a “city set on a hill” with their gospel light unhindered by internal strife or external apathy?
This light shines before men when they see our good works. They might not like or listen to our preaching, but actions (of kindness) speak louder than words (of eloquence). The world around is becoming very much darker. How much brighter can we make the light of the gospel shine out before our Lord comes again?
