View daily reading plan: Psalm 23; Psalm 100.1-5
The Israelites asked in unbelief, “Can God furnish (prepare) a table in the wilderness? That table was prepared in a great and terrible wilderness, where there were fiery serpents and scorpions (Deut 8:15), and God in grace miraculously met their every need. It was with the same tender compassion and shepherd care that the Lord Jesus, when on earth, spread a table in a desert place, and from the most meagre resources fully satisfied 5,000 men beside women and children; and again when he fed the 4,000 (Matt 14:21; 15:38).
We are passing through the wilderness of this world. We also may feel the hostility of surrounding enemies, such as the world, the flesh and the devil, but we are able to sit in the Lord’s presence and enjoy fellowship with Him. He would have us spend time there, feeding on Christ, and so maintaining spiritual health and vigour. The natural man knows nothing of the secret satisfaction that such a place affords and, sadly, even some believers are apt to forget the value of this place of fellowship.
