View daily reading plan: Psalm 23; John 14.1-4

Until now, David has spoken of the Shepherd being with him, leading, feeding, refreshing, guiding, protecting and accompanying him even in the valley of the shadow of death. Now, however, his thoughts turn to the time when he will be with the Shepherd beyond the ravages of present conditions, to dwell with Him for ever in a place where evil can never encroach.

As we consider these words, we remember the words of our Lord Jesus to anxious, troubled disciples, “In my Father’s house are many mansions … I go to prepare a place for you and … I will come again, and receive you unto myself” (John 14.2-3). Our Shepherd’s heart will only be fully satisfied, as will ours, when after the chequered experience of the wilderness years He brings us to that place of unending bliss.
