What Will Happen Next?

View daily reading plan: Matthew 24.42-47; 1 Thessalonians 4.16-17

The next great event which will happen to affect this world is that Christ will come from heaven to take all His people there just as He promised “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14.3).

With a loud shout and the sound of a great trumpet He will raise from their graves every believer in Christ who has died. At the same time, He will remove from the world every true Christian who is still alive. He will change them from being mortal into being immortal. He will take them through the air into heaven to be with Him forever, together with those believers raised from their graves (1 Thessalonians 4.16-17).  This will happen swiftly, suddenly, and without any warning or previous sign. No true believer in Christ will be left on earth or in a grave when the Lord Jesus comes again. This great event is often called the Rapture.

The Lord Jesus told us that we should expect His return any day: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord will come ...” (Matthew 24.42-47). The last chapter in the Bible encourages us to be watching and working and waiting for Him every day.  Let us be careful not to be ashamed before Him at His coming by doing what we know is wrong, or neglecting to do what is right (1 John 2.28).
