He Paid The Debt
Description
Tract Reads:
“The full impact of Christmas will not really be understood until Easter” is a quote from the financial world. Excessive spending in December can affect personal and national debt. Debt is
a problem that worries many people and can plunge them into distress and ultimately bankruptcy. The financiers have come up with many ideas how to deal with debt, from reducing the interest rate to spending our way out of it!
We all have a debt, however, that we cannot pay off, no matter how
hard we try. We are in debt to God – we have an obligation to Him that we cannot meet on our own. God created us and continues to give us life and breath, yet so many of us ignore Him and refuse
to believe His Word, the Bible. We are spiritually bankrupt, dragged down by our own sin against a holy God. Every day we add to our “sin-debt” by falling short of God’s standard of perfection. Romans 3.23 tells us that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of
God”. Many try to reduce their debt by good works or religion but the Bible explains that in comparison to God’s holiness “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” Isaiah 64.6.
This debt, if unpaid, leaves us in great danger as Romans 6.23 says “the wages of sin is death”. This is not just physical death but eternal
separation from God in hell. Like the financial climate, this seems bleak – debt with no means of payment. There is good news, however. We have seen that God is holy but God is also love and is “not willing that any should perish” 2 Peter 3.9. The Lord Jesus, God the Son, came into the world as a baby, but the full impact of that Christmas was not really understood until Easter!
He lived a holy and sin free life. The only way our “sin-debt” could be paid and our punishment taken away was if someone perfect took our place.
The Lord Jesus went to the cross at Calvary and He “put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” Hebrews 9.26. He knew sin couldn’t be ignored and had to be punished so He bore it for us. On the cross He cried out “It is finished!” John 19.30. His mission was accomplished. God showed His pleasure and satisfaction by raising the Lord Jesus from the grave and now He is alive in Heaven.
So many people live in denial about their debt until it’s too late and everything they own is lost. What about our “sin-debt”? The Lord Jesus has made a way that it can be paid in full and now we must accept that way. How can we have our debt cleared? Accept the fact that our sin will separate us from God. Repent of our sin and
turn away from it. Trust in the Lord Jesus for salvation. Don’t leave it too late because, “now is the accepted time…now is the day of
salvation” 2 Corinthians 6.2.
He paid a debt He did not owe;
I owed a debt I could not pay,
I needed someone to wash my sins away;
And, now, I sing a brand new song,
Amazing grace, my sins are gone,
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.
